Side Door is a great and fun place to volunteer if you want to help area youth or have a special interest such as sports and craft activities to share. (Lectures or presentations will quickly lose their attention!)
Side Door is open most Fridays after school from 2:15 – 5:00 pm. Set up starts at 1:30 pm and all volunteers leave by 5:15 pm. Volunteers are NOT required to attend weekly or participate the entire afternoon. On Mondays, volunteers are contacted to check their availability for Friday. A follow-up email is sent on Thursday confirming attendees, assignments and detailed plans for Friday afternoon.
Mandatory volunteer training is scheduled as appropriate.
There are two types of volunteers at Side Door – students and adults.
Student volunteers are extremely important as they serve as positive role models and mentors as they interact with the middle school attendees. They ensure play is safe, inclusive, and that kids have a fun afternoon. Additionally, student volunteers assist with set-up, clean-up, and administrative tasks.
Adult volunteers serve primarily as chaperones although those who want to take a more active role with sports etc. can do so. They manage the sign-in table and maintain an eye on all activities to ensure student volunteers keep play safe and inclusive. Adults will be asked to authorize a background check before volunteering.
If you are interested in becoming a Side Door volunteer or have questions, email Susan Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org. Volunteers must receive prior authorization before attending and participating, or they will be turned away at the entrance. Kid safety is a top priority.
